Thermal spray coatings for corrosion protection in the oil and gas industry.

The oil and gas industry have been using metal spray (or sometimes referred to as thermal spray) coatings for decades.

Corrosion protection coatings are typically applied by either the flame spray or the arc spray (sometimes referred to as the twin wire arc spray process).

Coating materials are commonly thermal spray aluminium (TSA), thermal spray zinc/aluminium (TSZA) or sometimes thermal spray zinc (TSZ).  The selection of these materials depends on the environment and the life expectancy to first maintenance.

Applications are common both upstream and downstream.

One of the most common applications is the prevention of Corrosion Under Insulation (CUI) where flame spray and arc spray coatings of thermal spray aluminium (TSA) have been successfully applied for over 30 years.  This coating is commonly specified for new and existing equipment with spraying projects currenlty active all around the world.

The above video shows the application of flame spray aluminium (TSA) for the prevention of CUI (Corrosion Under Insulation).  This work was completed in an active refinery but is also carried out on new installations before erection on-site.

Reason for use: Corrosion protection – prevention of Corrosion Under Insulation (CUI). Iris NV, based in Belgium, has expanded its use of metal spraying and purchased additional Metallisation equipment to accommodate this expansion. Iris was founded in 1946 as an industrial painting company specialising in the treatment of gas pipes, electrical stations, high tension networks and power pylons.
